Fall closet cleaning, what on Earth? Think Spring cleaning but for Fall. Fall is one of the most exciting seasons of the year. The holidays are around the corner, it’s starting to cool down outside, and most importantly you can FINALLY break out those over-sized sweaters! I do love when the warmer weather finally hits after a long winter but I’m always a little disappointed to pack up my favorite clothes. However, if you live in an apartment like I do, you know the struggle of having too many clothes and not enough closet space. No, it isn’t a bad problem to have, but a stuffed closet can cause unnecessary stress. So, where do you start? Cue the fall closet cleaning!
First Thing First
Fall closet cleaning isn’t rocket science. Start by removing all tank tops, strapless tops and strapless dresses, dresses without sleeves, crop tops and jean shorts. All of these items scream summer. As cute as they might be they are not season appropriate. You will have plenty of other opportunities to wear these later in the year. Do it, I promise you’ll live and be happier because of it. Storing these clothes until the appropriate season will ensure that you are never bored with your wardrobe options. Store these clothes in plastic tubs and place under your bed or in a closet/attic.
Organization is Key
Now that you have removed summer items, it’s time to make your closet more visually appealing. This will effect your mood more than you think. Your closet will go from a chaotic space to a place of peace. Warmer clothing should be on the left and colder clothing on the right. To make this even more simple go by left to right by sleeve length; long sleeves->midsleeves->short sleeves. Miscellaneous clothing can go on the far right, such as sleeveless cardigans. If you have enough room to hang bottoms then you can add those in with the space left on the right side.
Chunk It
If you have clothes that work for warm and cold weather ask yourself, “Have I worn this in the last 6 months?” If the answer is no, chunk it! For clothes that are specific to fall ask yourself, “Did I wear this last year?” If not, chunk it! Obviously, if you just bought something you wouldn’t include those items in the questioning. Now when I say chunk it I don’t mean throw it in the trash. You can try to make some money by selling it using an app like, Poshmark or by physically going into a store like Plato’s closet. If you don’t want to do that you can donate it to Goodwill or pass it down to a friend/sibling/roommate/etc.
Now that your closet is in mint condition you can sit back and enjoy. Maybe after all that cleaning you have some extra space for fall’s latest trend. If you are saving money there’s no reason to fill empty space with more clothes, just fill it with what you have by spacing your items further apart.
