When most people think about graphic tees, they immediately jump to the image of a young boy wearing a shirt with a cartoon or some silly slogan on their shirt. And for a long time, that was the most common sighting and market for creators of graphic tees. However, many brands have been introducing these tees into women’s clothing and it is becoming a pretty big trend. With pop culture references, phrases such as “Bye Felicia” and cute illustrations of avocados, graphic tees are making their mark. They are the perfect way to casually reflect how you feel about certain topics, or how you are feeling that day.
Not a morning person? Throw on a graphic tee that says “But first, coffee” to communicate that mornings just aren’t your thing - or that you are just addicted to coffee! With the rise of these graphic t-shirts, designers have created plenty of options. Some shirts have a play on words, some with drawings and there are a few in other languages as well. These tops are perfect for a casual look when you don’t want to wear a plain black, white, or colored shirt - just pair with cute jeans and shoes and you’re set!
How to Pick Graphic Tees
Graphic tees can be chic, but you have to make sure to pick the right ones. In a sea of so many fun graphic tees, it is hard to spot the ones that don’t make sense. So here are a few suggestions when deciding which one to rock:
1. Understand The Meaning
Whether it’s in a different language or your own, understand everything about your tee. Don’t purchase a shirt that says “Tres bien” just because you like the French language, even if you know it means very good in english. People will assume you speak the language and it will seem silly if you don’t actually know how to, yet you’re wearing a shirt in it. Definitely don’t purchase one that you have no idea what the words are, no matter how pretty the letters look! Also, make sure you understand the cultural references behind your tee - if there are any - like the popular Homiés t-shirt. Others might ask what it is referencing, and it is always helpful to be able to explain that Homiés is a satire of the brand Hermés, for example.
2. Keep It Tasteful
Graphic tees are fun and playful, but it is always important to consider where you are wearing them. If your tee is questionable in terms of appropriateness, avoid wearing it in more professional settings. Save them for outings with friends rather than showing up to work in a shirt that exclaims “Rosé all day” or “vacation wanted”.
3. Don’t Over Accessorize
The saying on your graphic tee should be the focus of your outfit. Though you are of course allowed to throw on a jacket over it and even a cute statement necklace, don’t draw too much attention away from your shirt. The whole purpose of a graphic tee is to let people know how you feel - so be proud!
